Project VII-Day One: White Flower

Long time, no see! Another 30 Sketches Project has begun. I've tortured myself with this same mission six times before - I wanted to see if I still had it in me.  Today I set out to make a drawing everyday for 30 days. Each project has a different twist, this time the focus is curves found in nature. The images come from photos I have taken over the last five years. Day One is a wee white flower I saw in my mom's backyard in Glen Rose, TX on April 13, 2013.

The two people out there that happen to stumble upon this project are probably asking themselves, "What's up with the red curve"? Well friend(s), wonder no longer. It all began with a drawing...

Two Hopi Pueblos and Three Wikiups,
pastel and Flashe paint on paper, 11"x15", 2017

The dude above instigated a body of work I've been calling Shapes of Shelters. I drew it earlier this year while doing an artist residency at Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in the lovely town of Nebraska City, NE. For my time at the Kimmel, I brought along an obsession with drawing simple shelters, some may even call primitive  - caves, tipis, wikiups, pueblos, etc. One of our most basic needs is shelter. It provides protection and security and the simplest way I could articulate the form of a shelter was with a curve made from a conte crayon. Next came a set of five small paintings then exploded into larger scale paintings which are still growing in number.

Project IV Day 18: Turkey Vulture (again)

I can't stop with the Turkey Vultures. I think I might have been one in a past life. Is that why I'm such a dirtbag ?

Project VII-Day Thirty: Grass

And that is a wrap! Day Thirty's photo was taken at Oliver Nature Park in Mansfield, TX earlier this summer. The labeling of each drawing evolved during the project. In the bottom left-hand corner is the sequence number of the drawing within the 30-day time frame and the location of where the reference photo was taken. My take away from this particular project was having the opportunity to spend more time with a special moment I had in nature. It allowed me to marvel at the intricacies of the plants and animals around us.

Project IV Day 25: Hoatzin Nestling

Yes, this guy does indeed exist. He is a Hoatzin nestling. One thing you should know about these birds is that they are born with two claws on each wing. They are clumsy in flight and use these claws to climb about in their native swamps of Venezuela and Guyana. Once they reach adulthood, they those their claws. Dinosaur times-style.
